If you own a residential, commercial, or industrial property that is north of forty years old than chances are high that the sewer pipes are either near or at the end of their expected lifecycle. This is due to the fact that the materials used to manufacturer the pipes back then was inferior when compared to today’s standards. For example, cast iron was the sewer pipe material of choice for many years. That is until experts finally figured it out that cast iron rusts when exposed to water for prolonged periods of time.
Sewer pipes not only carry water, they are continuously exposed to ground water as well.
This is not a good combination to say the least. Rust quickly turns into rot, and rot leads to holes in the pipes. Another popular material used to manufacture sewer pipes back in the day was clay. Although clay is basically waterproof and great at containing water it is extremely fragile and breaks easily. Given that the ground is in a constant state of shifting and moving that is also a bad combination. Now that you are aware of why older sewer pipes can break down so easily it is time to learn more about the sewer repair methods that are available in the Northridge, California area.
The Traditional Excavation Sewer Repair Method
For many years plumbing contractors have relied on the traditional excavation sewer repair method. It requires the excavation of a large and destructive trench that runs along the length and depth of the sewer pipeline in order to physically expose the pipes for repair or replacement. The trench destroys any of the landscaping and hardscaping that is located above the sewer pipeline, which can run for hundreds of feet. Once the plumbing contractor physically exposes the sewer pipes and makes the necessary repairs they fill the trench back in with dirt. It can take multiple weeks to complete the process, not to mention that they are not responsible for replacing the landscaping and hardscaping that was destroyed.
The Trenchless Sewer Repair Method
The trenchless sewer repair method was invented approximately fifteen years ago. It relies on technology as opposed to trenches. There are actually two different types of trenchless sewer repair procedures that advanced plumbing contractors employ depending on the current condition of the sewer pipeline.
Trenchless Pipe Lining
Trenchless pipe lining is performed when the existing sewer pipeline is in decent enough shape that it can be repaired. A small access point is made at one end of the sewer pipeline. A high-tech machine uses the access point to install a specially formulated wet epoxy resin to the interior surface areas of the sewer pipes. Once the resin hardens or cures in place it forms a solid liner that immediately fixes any breaks, cracks, or holes in the existing sewer pipeline. The entire process takes one day to complete from start to finish and will last for well over fifty years. Trenchless pipe lining approximately fifty-percent more cost effective than the traditional excavation method.
Trenchless Pipe Bursting
Trenchless pipe bursting is performed when the existing sewer pipeline is beyond repair. A small access point is made at each end of the sewer pipeline. A different high-tech machine uses the access point to install a continuous plastic PVC pipe into the existing sewer pipes. As the new pipe is being installed it bursts the old one into a bunch of pieces that are naturally disbursed into the ground where they are left to rot. The entire process takes on day to complete from start to finish and the new pipe will last upwards of one hundred years. Trenchless pipe bursting is significantly more cost effective than the traditional excavation method.
