We are fortunate to live in a day and age when technological advancements have greatly improved our way of living. It goes across the board from medical operations that save lives to plumbing procedures that save property owners time and money. Trenchless sewer repair is one of those previously mentioned procedures. In the not too distant past there was only one way that plumbing contractors could fix the sewer pipes. They excavated a large and destructive trench along the length and depth of the sewer pipeline in order to physically expose it for repair or replacement.
The trench would ruin any of the landscaping and hardscaping in its path. By the time the trench was dug, the sewer repairs were made, and the trench was filled back in with dirt it could take multiple weeks and costs well over $25,000. Not to mention that the landscaping and hardscaping must be replaced, which is not the responsibility of the plumbing contractor. Although many plumbers still use this outdated method to this day there is a far better method available. Trenchless sewer repair has been available in the Porter Ranch, California area for just about fifteen years.
There are actually two different types of procedures that rely in technology instead of trenches. The trenchless pipe lining process only requires a small access point at one end of the sewer pipeline. A high-tech machine uses the small access point to install a wet epoxy resin to the interior surfaces of the sewer pipes. The epoxy resin typically cures in place within a few hours to form a hard, impenetrable liner. The new liner, or pipe within a pipe seals off any existing cracks, small breaks, or small holes within the existing sewer pipeline, and prevents any further damage from occurring.
It will last for well over fifty years, costs approximately fifty percent less than the traditional excavation method, and can be installed in as little as one day from start to finish. If the existing sewer pipes are in bad enough shape that the pipe lining process will not work, than the trenchless pipe bursting method is implemented. It requires two small access points, one at each end of the sewer pipeline. A different type of high-tech machine uses the small access points to install a one-piece, plastic PVC pipe into the sewer pipes.
As the PVC pipe is being pushed, pulled, and blown through it bursts the existing sewer pipeline into a bunch of fragmented pieces. The old pipe bursts in an outward motion, which allows the pieces to be disbursed into the ground where they are left to rot. The new plastic PVC sewer pipeline will easily last for one-hundred years, costs significantly less than the traditional excavation method, and can be installed in as little as one day from start to finish.
